Finding Purpose

Scott's Column

I turn 72 tomorrow.  Many of my contemporaries have already retired and many more are plotting their “exit strategies.”  Not me.  I love this stuff.

Sometimes I wonder if there’s something wrong with me.  Shouldn’t I be yearning for the easy life where I can do whatever I want whenever I want?

No way.  My colleagues and I at First Ascent just joined a new team.  Now we are part of the GeoWealth team.  And now we’re really going to have some fun.

The idea behind First Ascent was simple.  Most people are clueless when it comes to managing their money and planning for their financial security.  Financial advisors are the answer.

But financial advisors need help too.  So, we built a firm that could provide serious investment management and back-office support to advisors, allowing them to better serve their clients.

Then along came GeoWealth.  They had built an awesome technology and investment support platform to serve the very same community of advisors.  We were a perfect match.

If you want to hear our story, I’d be glad to tell you all about it, but that’s not the point of this post.  The point is, when you find your purpose, you also find your joy.

For me, there is joy in serving.

First Ascent has been ranked by advisors as the #1 TAMP for the last 4 years in the T3/Inside Information Advisor Software Survey based on client satisfaction.  There is joy in that.

Why would I want to punch out and take up golf or play Parcheesi on the front porch with my buds?  What could be better than being useful and having a purpose?

I can still climb mountains and play guitar with my band.  But every day I get the satisfaction of knowing that I am helping advisors help their clients.  We’re making the world a better place.

Now I get to do it with the super-talented team from GeoWealth.  Some of my mates from First Ascent and I went up to Chicago to celebrate last week, as you can see in this picture.

I can’t wait to see what we can do together.  Watch out world!
